Musky Fly Fishing

It probably has more cliches than any other fish out there. All of which are designed to excuse an angler for their poor musky angling performance. Simple as that. Musky are the apex predator of any river system they inhabit.

When you feed from the top, you can do what ever you want, whenever you want for any reason you deem worthy, no matter how ridiculous that reason may seem to humans. That is exactly how musky behave. They don't care about you. They don't care how many hours you stay awake trying to anticipate their moody behavior. They don't care that you spent money out of your kid's college fund for fly tying materials. Musky are narcissistic sociopaths.

If you are still reading, you are a candidate for the sickness. Beware, once you board the ride, there is no getting off.

I conduct all my guided fly fishing musky trips in North Carolina on the French Broad River. There are several different sections I float depending on flows and time of year. Lodging can be arranged if you want to book me for multiple days.

Trip Details

I offer long full days only for musky fly fishing (8-12 hours) November 1 - March 31. After all, the only way to catch a musky is too fish for them.

I provide all the equipment, flies and leaders. If you want to bring your own, I will be happy to discuss with you exactly what you need. I typically use 11 and 12 weight fly rods with the occasional 10.

Lunch is provided at no additional charge. You may choose either gourmet deli Sandwiches or a small menu of grilled hot lunches are available.

Smallmouth  Bass are indigenous to the tributaries of the Tennessee River system. This includes the French Broad and Little Tennessee Rivers and all their tributaries. River Smallmouth Bass are a fierce sportfish that rightfully deserve the respect they have earned. Once I discovered them, it was difficult to guide only trout.

Spring of the year is my favorite time to guide Smallmouth Bass. I use a combination of poppers, jig flies and articulated streamers on 7/8 weight rods with both floating and sinking lines to target trophy sized Smallmouth. These are a very forgiving species and a great way to learn fly fishing with larger rods and flies. In fact, some anglers end up preferring smallmouth fishing after just one trip.

I offer half days and  full days October 15 - May 31 on the Little Tennessee and French Broad Rivers in North Carolina.

Brown Trout Streamer Fishing

Chattahoochee Brown Trout Streamer Guided Streamer Fishing

It's a fish that shouldn't even be on this continent but, it's here flourishing in multiple rivers in Georgia. Most of these rivers have a naturally reproducing brown trout able to self sustain habitually.

Brown trout are notorious streamer eaters. It is the absolute best way to learn streamer fishing and a great foundation for any species of fish that requires a "strip set". This is my pathway as a guide to produce the trophy fish that anglers want. Streamer fishing is the one and only guaranteed way to attract the bite from the trophy fish that you want to catch. You won't regret learning to streamer fish.

I offer half days and full days October 15 - May 31 on the Toccoa River. All guided fly fishing trips conducted inside the Chattahoochee National Forest are operated with Reel Angling Adventures USDA commercial permit.

Beginning Fly Fishing

Classic Fly Fishing for Trout

Classic Fly Fishing for Trout

Chattahoochee River Wild Brown Trout

You have to crawl before you can walk. Fly fishing is hard but not impossible. No one begins fly fishing by casting flies the size of Norwegian rats. In this case, it is definitely better to start small and work towards your goal of a trophy fish. Truthfully, it's the only way.

My beginning fly fishing trip is done on the water, in a drift boat, either a half day or a full day. Conducting the trip in the drift boat negates the need for waders and gives you a personal instruction level that you won't receive in a group. I cover rod, reel, fly line selection, leader/tippet selection, explanation of trout flies, fly casting, presentations, how to play a fish and how to handle fish. In addition, I explain how to determine water and weather conditions. This full day trip is as comprehensive as it gets and easily the very best way to get started fly fishing. I supply everything, including lunch on full days. Al you need to do is show up.

Casting dry flies and the trout that eat them; it never gets old and I never get tired of watching it. Anyone that grows weary of it should be tested for incoherency. Fly fishing for trout is why most of us began fly fishing to begin with.

While the rivers  of  southern  Appalachia  may not boast bug hatches rivaling a western river, aquatic insect life here is prolific enough to produce sporadic hatches. These hatches consist mostly of stoneflies and caddis flies in every form of their life cycle. Add a few BWO's and some local terrestrials and you have a buffet suitable for any trout in the region.

I use a combination of 5/6 weight rods for dry dropper/indicator fishing and 4 weights for dry fly fishing. I provide all the gear, flies, etc. You are welcome to bring your own gear if you prefer.

Koffler Rocky Mountain Skiff

Drift Boat Fishing Only

I use a 1990 Koffler Rocky Mountain Skiff for all my guide trips in Southern Appalachia. She's an old classic boat that rows great, fishes comfortably and has been guiding fly anglers almost as long as I have. Her guiding career began in Montana in 1990. She's a one of a kind.
