Every once in a while, I get surprised. Patagonia had never really been a fishing destination that stayed on my radar for very long. I had been there, fishing was good, it was pretty. Literally, I viewed it as nothing more than just another trout fishing destination for the gringos in our North American winter months. Then one day, completely by fate and chance, I met Brian Pearson. Founder of UpScape Travel.
Brian coerced me into traveling with him to the Jeinimeni region of Patagonia Chile to fish for the lake run brown trout on the pre spawning run in the Jeinimeni river. He also talked about how there were several tributaries to the Jeinimeni that are basically unfished. He laid out in great detail the private land Outpost Camp right on the river's edge. Told me it had hot showers and flush toilets. In a tent camp. It all sounded great, too great but, he had me at anadromous brown trout.
Upon arriving in Balmaceda, I began the day long journey around Lago General Carrerra and in to the Jeinimeni Mountains. I had never been anywhere like it. It was different. Simple, rugged, seemingly untouched. The local people were more friendly than any I have ever encountered. I hate the cliche but, it really was like going back in time. I arrived at camp. Everything was exactly as described. If anything, Brian probably undersold it. Smart. The infrastructure was completely in place. All they needed was a fishing program. Brian and I went to work.
The Jeinimeni trip evolved into a very specific fishing adventure. It's a perfect combination of luxury expedition style accommodations combined with exploration style fishing. In other words, bring a back pack and break in your wading boots before you get there. Jeinimeni is a lot of hiking. During your 6 guided fishing days, we will spend a couple of days on the tributaries, one day at Lago Jeinimeni and three days on the Jeinimeni main river. The beauty of this trip is that you can modify it to how ever you want it to be. If you want more days in the tributaries and less days on the main river, no problem. we can make that happen.
Each day begins 7am with a gourmet chef's breakfast (yes we do have a trained chef). After breakfast we will depart either by foot or by truck depending on the day you select. Sack lunches are prepared by the chef and staff. We fish until 5 pm or so and then return to camp for appetizers, Chilean wine, beer and finally dinner. Rest assured you will have no trouble sleeping in our comfortable Crua tents with queen size mattresses.
